A special pre-Mother’s Day Fun in the Son celebration is scheduled to take place this Saturday evening at the Black River Independent Baptist Church in New Town, St Elizabeth. Organisers expect the event, with gates opening at 5:00 pm, will uplift spirits and bring renewed joy to the local community as residents continue to rebuild after recent hardships.
Tommy Cowan of Glory Music, one of the organisers, expressed that the event is part of ongoing initiatives aimed at inspiring St Elizabeth communities to embrace faith and confidence during challenging times. “This is part of our ongoing efforts to inspire the communities of St Elizabeth; to believe in themselves and choose faith over fear,” Cowan shared. He recounted his personal connection to the area, having been born in Newmarket, St Elizabeth, and recalled how the community has faced setbacks from flooding in the past and repeatedly rallied to resume productive agricultural activity in the parish.
He emphasised the community’s resilient spirit, saying, “We’re again believing in God the Father through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit that we will rise again.” St Elizabeth was among the hardest hit parishes when Hurricane Melissa struck in late October 2025, causing significant disruption and damage across the region.
The pre-Mother’s Day event will feature ministry-led activities with performances by notable artists including Carlene Davis, the Brown Trio, Orville Sutherland, The Right Band, and the Rushing Wind Band. Praise and worship music will be led by Zeal Music. The event’s spiritual proceedings will be hosted by Reverends Dr Audley Black and Donna Black.
Cowan noted the encouraging signs of recovery witnessed in areas such as Lewisville, Mocho, and Nightingale Grove within New Market. Following a similar Fun in the Son Christmas event at Nightingale Grove Baptist Church last December, he observed that crops are regenerating, local markets in Lewisville are lively, and people are actively repairing and rebuilding homes and businesses. This progress offers hope and inspiration amidst the ongoing recovery efforts.
